Hamilton Crabb first planted To Kalon in 1868. More than 150 years later, it remains one of the Napa Valley’s most sought-after sources for Cabernet Sauvignon — a vineyard that has produced benchmark wine across ownership changes, replanting cycles, and generations of winemakers. Beaulieu Vineyard held it for decades before selling to Beckstoffer in 1993. The vineyard was replanted in 1994 to multiple Cabernet Sauvignon and Cabernet Franc clones with modern trellising and closer vine spacing. A land conservation easement placed in 2007 permanently prohibits non-agricultural development on the property.
Located in Oakville on a portion of the historic original To Kalon site, the vineyard benefits from deep, gravelly loam soils and one of the warmer stretches of the valley floor — conditions that build structure and concentration without losing freshness. The name To Kalon is Greek for “the beautiful” or “the highest good.” The fruit tends to make the case on its own.
