A plethora of red fruit, cinnamon and spice lead in this alluring and provocative wine. Planted to 18 different Pinot Noir clones, there are vast arrays of elements which combine to produce incredibly complex aromatics and fruit profile. Dark red fruits, tobacco and coffee notes lead into the extremely long finish which concludes with notes of mineral and nutmeg. Hold onto this wine for an additional 10 years for the greatest reward!
This wine is made from a 3-acre site on the Williams Selyem Estate Vineyard and is extremely unique. How so? Well, in that every 18th vine in each row is a different clone or field selection intermixed throughout the block – all planted on 420A rootstock. The inter-dispersion of these clones allows this homogeneous mixture to illustrate the true expression of this site. Planting vines in this way is reminiscent of the way things were done in Burgundy before we began exploring the genetics of our field selections.
The Block 10 Mass Selection Pinot Noir represents a slight departure in winemaking for us at Williams Selyem. In addition to the Francois Frères barrels we traditionally use, we also used 50% Marcel Cadet (a water-bent barrel) from Dargaud et Jaegle. Furthermore, 35-38% whole cluster was used in the uninoculated fermentation to add additional complexity and purity of site. The wine is then aged in 50% new oak and 50% once used oak for approximately 18 months. The true persona of this location is very much verbalized in this wine. We are crafting each of these vintages to hopefully mature in a decade or two.
Simply put, the 2012 vintage was amazing in many respects. After the cool growing seasons of 2010 and 2011, which resulted in excellent quality but very low yields, Mother Nature was smiling on us in 2012 with superb growing conditions for a bountiful harvest. The exceptional weather during the spring allowed for moderate vegetative growth, superb flowering conditions and an above average fruit set — berries and clusters sized up beyond original expectations. 2012 was a vintage where ripe mature stems, seeds and skin tannins were achieved with harmoniously balanced natural acidity. Enveloped with pure intense aromas, juicy flavors and rich textures, these structured wines are clearly the result of a truly extraordinary vintage. A vintage like this, where everything comes together perfectly, is rare and will certainly be a vintage to enjoy for many years to come!
