Sustainability

What is sustainable agriculture? As we define it, environmentally and socially responsible grape growing. Tending to our estate vineyards has transformed Williams Selyem from buyers of high-end grapes into stewards of the land.

Often billed as the new buzz-word in the wine business, "sustainability" is defined as a holistic approach to growing and food production that respects the environment, the ecosystem and even society. "Organic" is a term given to environmentally friendly methods that use no chemicals or pesticides.

A broad array of sustainable practices can be found across Northern California. Some wineries are choosing to wean themselves off of conventional methods. And, as growers and vintners will attest, with each level comes unique challenges and benefits.

The path to sustainability covers a broad spectrum of techniques and practices. For example, the use of specialized cover crops, regulated deficit irrigation, canopy management and sustainable pest management are a few examples. The goal for older, existing vineyards is to minimize pesticide and chemical use, while controlling irrigation and continuing the development of nutrient-rich soils. As it relates to new vineyard developments, sustainability involves minimal disruption of the current ecosystem and natural land formations. As with the development of our Litton Estate Vineyard, with the exception of removing a few rocks, vineyards were planted around hundred year-old oak trees. Special care was taken to not disturb, but to maintain natural wildlife corridors and habitat.

These practices not only help us to be more responsible land owners, but they allow us to produce exceptional quality grapes. For more information please visit the Wine Institute's section on sustainable growing practices: http://www.wineinstitute.org/
